Resume / Project Deep Dive (HM or Tech Screen Opener)

September 30, 2026 · 1 min read
Requirements
- Have two or three projects ready that can sustain an in-depth technical discussion.
- Be prepared to walk through the main technical problem, the architectural decisions you made, and the trade-offs those decisions involved.
- Demonstrate personal ownership by pointing to specific choices and results, not just describing what the team did.
- Bring examples that include speaking directly with customers and handling on-call or incident-response situations.
- Prepare follow-up questions about the team's business architecture.
Notes
- Follow a consistent narrative arc: context and constraints, architecture, your decisions, alternatives you ruled out, measurable outcome, and what you would change now.
- Make the system boundary and your individual contribution clear so the interviewer can shift between technical depth and ownership without losing track.
- In an IC3 engineering-manager round meant to cover system design, roughly the first 30 minutes centered on the resume. The last 13 minutes moved to a client-server whiteboard exercise and troubleshooting a frontend application failure.
Preparation
- Create a one-page matrix linking each chosen project to its technical challenge, architecture choice, ownership decision, customer impact, and operational lesson; put one concrete fact in every cell.
- Practice a two-minute architecture walkthrough and a five-minute deep dive for each project, including one alternative you rejected and one improvement you would make next.
- Write three questions about the target team's business architecture and practice tying each question to a relevant decision from one of your projects.
