Explain the ReAct Agent Loop
TrueInterview
September 26, 2026 · 1 min read
Walk through the ReAct architecture as it applies to an agent that uses tools. Describe the interplay among reasoning, actions, and observations, and explain how the loop determines whether to keep going or stop.
Constraints & Assumptions
Assume a generic tool-enabled application with a fixed set of tool schemas. Concentrate on observable transitions between states and on decision quality; an action has to be grounded in the tools you actually have, and its result counts only as an observation—not as proof that the overall task succeeded.
Clarifying Questions
Which tools can be used? What information is carried over from one iteration to the next? How do you detect failures, enforce time budgets, and verify completion? Which actions need outside approval?
What a Strong Answer Covers
A complete answer should include the repeating decide-act-observe cycle, validation of tool arguments, how context is updated, the conditions for stopping, and typical failure modes.
Follow-up Questions
What stops the agent from making the same ineffective tool call over and over? How should the agent respond when a tool returns an ambiguous result? In what situations is a fixed workflow more dependable than an open-ended loop? Overview: Explain a ReAct tool loop in terms of state, action selection, observations, recovery, stopping criteria, and how you confirm the task is actually complete.
