Data-Center Camera Access Incident Response
TrueInterview
September 30, 2026 · 1 min read
The Ask
- Situation: the credentials or access mechanism for the data center's security camera system have stopped working.
- Describe what steps to take during the first hour.
- Describe what to do within the next 24 hours.
- Describe what to do within one week.
Key Observations
- Simply containing the issue right away was not considered sufficient; the interviewer wanted separate, specific actions for each of the three time periods.
- A solid framework divides the response into containment, then restoration, and finally prevention:
- Within the first hour: identify who owns the problem and its extent, set up temporary on-site monitoring, save access and audit trails, revoke or rotate the compromised credentials using the approved emergency procedure, and notify security and facilities teams.
- Within a day: bring back controlled access, confirm every camera is covering its area and recording properly, examine recent access modifications, record a timeline of what happened, and share any remaining risk.
- Within a week: finish the root-cause investigation, fix any gaps in credentials or recovery steps, test the updated recovery procedure, and hand off follow-up items to specific people with deadlines for checking.
- For each step, say who is responsible, how you will confirm it worked, and what records or evidence need to be kept.
Preparing Your Answer
- Make a one-page table with columns for time frame, owner, action, verification method, and what triggers an escalation.
- Practice a three-minute response that moves smoothly from initial containment to service recovery, and then to prevention.
- For each time period, include one way to verify and one backup option; don't list actions without explaining how you confirm coverage.
