Senior Staff Hiring-Manager Conversation

Requirements
Be ready to respond to the following questions from the hiring manager:
- Do you have a job right now?
- What is prompting you to look beyond your present position?
- Walk through the work you have done across the past decade.
- Where has your attention been concentrated over the most recent few years?
Connect your experience to the problems the team is facing at the moment.
Notes
This conversation comes early in the process for a Senior Staff backend-infrastructure role, following the initial recruiter call. A dedicated technical-depth interview took place afterward; the discussion with the hiring manager centered mostly on behavior and background.
Preparation
- Take 15 minutes to sketch a single-page timeline covering the past ten years of your career. For every period, note what you were responsible for and one specific contribution, and then call out the recent work that bears most directly on backend infrastructure.
- Practice a two-minute overview of what you have been responsible for recently, plus a one-minute account of why a change appeals to you. Record each one and confirm that both clearly convey your own work and your own reasons.
- Write down three questions about what the team is currently struggling with. Pair each with a fitting example from your own history, and distinguish what you already understand about the role from what you still need to find out.
