Interview Prompt
Tell us about a project spanning multiple teams where you found a performance bottleneck in a system and the group could not agree on how to fix it. Walk through how you quantified the bottleneck, brought teams with conflicting priorities into alignment, settled on a course of action, and confirmed the fix made the system better rather than moving the issue somewhere else.
Constraints & Assumptions
- Pick a single real bottleneck and name the user-facing or service metric it hurt.
- Portray the opposing side fairly and separate persuasion or influence from positional power.
- Show evidence from before and after, plus any regression protection you put in place.
Clarifying Questions to Ask
- Who owned the constrained part of the system, and which team felt the effect?
- Did the conflict concern the root cause, the urgency, or how to implement the fix?
- What test or experiment would tell the competing explanations apart?
What a Strong Answer Covers
- A diagnosis driven by measurements, not optimization done too early.
- Alignment across teams around common metrics for success and safety.
- An equitable decision process based on experiments, trade-offs, and a clearly assigned owner.
- Evidence that latency, throughput, error rates, and load on downstream services changed in the planned direction.
Follow-up Questions
- What would you do if the team that owned the component lacked the capacity to ship the fix you preferred?
- What trade-off did you accept in exchange for the gain?
- How did you prevent the same problem from coming back?
Overview: Get ready to share a data-driven story about resolving cross-team disagreement over a performance bottleneck, moving from rival hypotheses to shared metrics, implementation, and safeguards against regressions.
