Working Through a Workplace Conflict
Tell a story about an actual conflict at work: what each person or side needed, how you shifted the discussion, what was ultimately decided, and the measurable or visible result.
Constraints & Assumptions
- Stick to a single, clearly bounded professional example, and leave out names or anything confidential.
- Separate disagreements over goals or evidence from personal friction.
- Emphasize what you personally did instead of placing all the responsibility on other people.
Clarifying Questions to Ask
- Which decision was stuck because of the conflict?
- What shared goal or evidence could both parties agree on?
- What did you take away or change afterward?
Hint — Name both interests: State the valid concern on each side before you explain how the disagreement was settled.
What a Strong Answer Covers
- A brief description of the situation and your part in it.
- Concrete choices around listening, gathering evidence, negotiating, and escalating.
- A way of deciding, plus an outcome that connects back to the original conflict.
- Reflection showing how the relationship or process got better.
Follow-up Questions
- What would you do if the other side still would not accept the agreed decision process?
- How could you tell the conflict was actually over?
Overview: Build a realistic conflict-resolution story that shows listening, evidence, ownership, and a working agreement that lasts.
