Getting Productive Fast in a Large Unfamiliar Codebase

Tell me about a time you moved onto a team or project whose codebase was big and new to you, and you had to get up to speed fast. Cover why the code was difficult to find your way around, the specific things you did to ramp up, how much time passed before your contributions really counted, and what you set up so the engineer after you would have an easier start.
