Principles & Leadership Behavioral Rounds

Requirements
- Principles round: instead of recounting past experiences, you face a hypothetical scenario and must explain your actions — they assess your logic and how it connects to Vanta's core values. Example: mid-build you discover an unexpected bug that would create tech debt if ignored, but fixing it pushes the launch date — how do you choose, and under what circumstances would you prioritize paying down the debt instead?
- Learning prompt: talk about something new you picked up in the last six months and how you went about learning it.
- Manager / Leadership round: present a project you led; the interviewer focuses on your thinking, choices, and trade-offs rather than the final result. Keep the narrative at the leadership and impact level, only diving into technical specifics when they are directly relevant.
- Recurring prompts: settling a disagreement with a colleague; delivering bad news to stakeholders; what you do when time is too short; coaching others; showing a positive effect on your team; collaborating effectively with senior leadership.
Notes
- The behavioral standard is measured against an internal framework of values (similar to Amazon's Leadership Principles), so get ready with stories that align with those tenets as well as real-time reasoning for scenarios.
- Feedback in these rounds is often imprecise and can seem random — one person was rejected for "not providing concrete examples" in a round the recruiter described as hypothetical, and another was turned down in the leadership round because their project was deemed "not impactful enough." Lead with well-defined, high-impact examples and spell out your decision-making process.
- For questions about team impact, have more than one solid example ready so you can pick the one that best shows influence extending beyond your own tasks.
