Question
Walk me through a major obstacle that put a goal you owned at risk. How did you identify the actual constraint, adjust the plan, and keep everyone on the same page until things were resolved?
Constraints & Assumptions
- Pick an obstacle that could not be solved by simply working harder yourself.
- Show the diagnosis before the action.
- Cover the revised plan, how you communicated it, and the trade-off involved.
- A smaller delivery is fine if that was the responsible call.
Clarifying Questions to Ask
- Do you want a technical dependency, a resource limitation, or a stakeholder-related obstacle?
- Should I focus on how fast I recovered or on how I made the decision?
- Is it acceptable if the original goal was only partially met? hint Find the bottleneck, not the symptom Figure out which dependency or assumption really drives the schedule, then reshape the scope around it.
What a Strong Answer Covers
- The goal, the obstacle, and the evidence pointing to the bottleneck.
- The options you weighed and why the chosen response matched the risk.
- Clear ownership and regular stakeholder updates.
- A measurable result and a step to prevent recurrence.
- No dependence on heroic effort as the primary strategy.
Follow-up Questions
- When did you realize the original plan was not going to work?
- What did you stop doing?
- How did you rebuild confidence after changing the commitment? Overview: Describe a significant obstacle that threatened an outcome you owned and demanded more than extra personal effort. Explain how you diagnosed the true constraint, changed the plan, communicated trade-offs, aligned people, and reached a responsible result.
