Proving a Low-Traffic Service Can Scale to 1000 RPS

System Design · Karat · Medium

A service currently receives roughly 1 request per second. Describe how you would determine whether it is capable of sustaining a load of 1000 requests per second. As part of your answer, evaluate the following proposal: run a load test against a single host, then multiply the measured throughput by the number of hosts running in production. Discuss what is wrong with, or missing from, that approach.
