Requirements
A conversation lasting roughly one hour (sometimes a shorter 30-minute HR screen early in the process) that walks through your full story and tests values alignment. Frequently asked questions include:
- Walk through your background, typically starting from your undergraduate major: why you picked that major, each graduate or career move, and the reasoning behind every job switch and departure.
- Why software / why engineering — what pulled you into technology.
- Why Shopify, why now — and directly: "did you review the materials I shared (Shopify values / CEO writings / the Shopify stories portal)? What stood out or worried you? Which values resonate with you?"
- Future direction — what you seek in your next position / who you aim to be in 3–5 years.
- How you pick up a new subject quickly.
- How you communicate during projects, especially with non-technical colleagues.
- Project introduction — describe a primary (often ML) project.
- A values curveball, for instance "What would you do if you disliked a product a merchant was selling?" and your perspective on Shopify's ~40% growth expectation.
- Logistics: sponsorship, salary expectation, notice period, and your questions for them.
Notes
- This stage eliminates a significant portion of candidates regardless of technical ability — treat it as critical, not a rubber stamp. Several candidates observe that not using the full hour is a negative indicator.
- Read the pre-shared materials thoroughly. Interviewers explicitly verify whether you read the Shopify values / culture / CEO content and expect a genuine, specific reaction — not a generic pitch.
- Style matters: interviewers cut you off if you go into excessive detail, and favor candidates who actively steer the discussion toward their strengths. The recording is sometimes transcribed and processed through AI for evaluation.
- The recruiter may use this conversation to determine your path (MLE vs. SWE, IC vs. manager).
Preparation
- Build a concise, chronological story with a clear why behind every school/job choice and departure; practice it to occupy roughly an hour without wandering.
- Study Shopify's values, the founder/CEO writings, and the "Shopify stories" content, and prepare a specific, honest reaction along with which values click and why.
- Prepare responses for the merchant-product values question, the 40%-growth expectation, fast-learning, and communicating with non-technical stakeholders.
