Requirements
Multiple reports agree on this set of behavioral questions:
- Why do you want to work at Stripe?
- Tell me about your most impactful or proudest project, and expect detailed follow-up questions (e.g., "How was it evaluated?", "What was the team size?", "How did you build X?").
- Describe a technical problem you encountered and how you solved it.
- Tell me about a disagreement you had with a coworker or manager.
- Give an example of a quick decision you made and what informed it.
- Share a time when you mentored another person.
- What would your current manager say about you?
- What are your goals for your first two years at Stripe?
- What are the three main strengths you would bring to Stripe?
- (Recently added) How do you use AI in your daily engineering tasks?
Notes
- One candidate reported that the hiring manager round contained almost no technical content and seemed like a formality.
- Reference checks are thorough, with roughly 30-minute calls for each reference. Several offers have been withdrawn after this step, typically with the phrase "no strong signal from references."
- Lately, hiring manager rounds often include a 5–10 minute segment on how you use AI, which has become a common topic.
Preparation
- Prepare at least three well-practiced stories: a project you're proud of, a conflict with another team, and a decision made under time pressure. Each story should have enough detail to answer two or three follow-up questions.
- Craft a specific "why Stripe" answer that mentions payments or developer-platform details, rather than generic praise for the company.
- Reach out to your references beforehand; Stripe's reference calls last about 30 minutes and dig into technical ability, not just cultural fit.
- Be ready with a concrete example of how you use AI in your current work.
