Requirements
Plan for behavioral questions woven through multiple stages of the interview process. Common topics include:
- Outline your most challenging or complex project: its size, your specific ownership, and your key takeaways.
- Recount a disagreement and how you worked through it (conflict resolution) — interviewers may press for a case where you directly voiced your objection.
- Narratives involving cross-functional teamwork.
- Your reasons for choosing Figma, what you seek in your next position, and your outlook on AI-powered products.
- Probes into scope and leadership: persistent questions like "who was behind that decision?" and "were you operating as the tech lead?"
- Mentoring experiences, a growth-oriented mindset, and how you devise a roadmap or widen your area of responsibility.
- Feedback in both directions: delivering tough feedback yourself, and managing a challenging colleague.
Notes
- Scope receives rigorous evaluation, particularly at senior or staff levels. Present your biggest, trickiest, longest-running project first, even when asked for something "small"; underselling your scope has triggered down-leveling on the org-wide (level 0–1) portion of the assessment. Interviewers tend to judge in real time, so put your strongest scope signals up front.
- Conflict-focused questions are a frequent pitfall: prepare an episode where you visibly disagreed and steered the outcome, not one where you simply eased tensions. Aim for a "two sides of the same coin" disagreement that you reinterpreted and resolved rather than a clash of irreconcilable values.
- For senior-level offers, expect an extra director-level behavioral round plus a reference check needing two contacts (a former manager and a peer) before an offer materializes. A final conversation with an executive or VP (mostly behavioral) typically determines the level.
- The quality of interviewer engagement varies; you may encounter hiring managers who seem disconnected. Keep steering the dialogue regardless.
Preparation
- Craft 2–3 high-scope STAR narratives (most complex project, a conflict where you voiced disagreement, cross-functional collaboration) and practice opening with scope and your ownership role.
- Develop concise replies for your motivation to join Figma, your next-role ambitions, and your opinion on AI in design tools; line up one manager and one peer reference ahead of time for senior interview loops.
