Prompt
Describe a situation where you assisted a coworker in working through a tough problem. Cover how you figured out what they actually needed, how you pitched in without stripping away their ownership, and what the team took away from the exchange.
Constraints & Assumptions
- Base your answer on a concrete event that involved a real obstacle.
- Make clear the difference between coaching, collaborating, and simply doing the task for the other person.
- Acknowledge what the colleague contributed and describe any improvement that stuck.
- Avoid presenting the help as saving a teammate who could not handle it.
Clarifying Questions to Ask
- Is it acceptable for the colleague to be outside the candidate's direct team?
- Should the story focus on technical debugging or on broader forms of support?
- Is the expected outcome supposed to include sharing knowledge?
Hint — Diagnose before offering a fix: Ask the colleague to show the failure, the model they are currently working from, and what they have already ruled out before you propose a solution.
What a Strong Answer Covers
- The colleague's objective and the barrier they faced are presented with respect.
- The candidate listens, isolates the issue, and selects a level of help that fits the situation.
- Ownership remains unambiguous, and the contributions of both people are evident.
- The problem at hand is either resolved or moved forward in a meaningful way.
- Knowledge, tooling, or documentation lowers the likelihood that the same blocker comes up again.
- The response considers limits and avoids building a dependent relationship.
Follow-up Questions
- How could you tell that your help was actually welcome?
- What did the colleague find that you had overlooked?
- What would you do if offering help put your own commitments at risk?
- How did you turn the solution into something useful for other people?
Overview: Give an account of a particular time you helped a coworker solve a hard problem while keeping their ownership intact. Show how you grasped what was needed, contributed in a respectful way, and produced a lasting benefit for the coworker or the team.
