Prompt
Describe a project in which communicating with another person or team was hard and the requirements were unclear. Explain how you identified what was ambiguous, built a shared process for making decisions, worked through disagreement, and kept delivery on track without claiming every uncertainty could be eliminated.
Constraints & Assumptions
- Draw on a single real project, and keep any confidential names or data protected.
- Highlight the communication choices you made, rather than only the other side's weaknesses.
- Give a result that could be observed, plus one area you would improve.
Clarifying Questions to Ask
- Did the ambiguity concern the outcome, ownership, interface, schedule, or who had decision authority?
- What did each side believe before the disagreement became visible?
- Which decisions could be reversed later, and which required an explicit commitment?
Hint — Turn ambiguity into a list: Write out unresolved decisions, owners, deadlines, and impact instead of treating ambiguity as one vague project condition.
What a Strong Answer Covers
- The specific stakes, stakeholders, and what the candidate was responsible for.
- The evidence you used to distinguish factual uncertainty from interpersonal friction.
- A concrete artifact or meeting structure that made the decisions visible.
- The trade-offs, when you chose to escalate, and how you kept executing while questions were still open.
- The result, remaining risk, and a lesson you applied afterward.
Follow-up Questions
- What would you do if the other team still would not commit?
- How did you make sure quieter stakeholders could push back on the decision?
- Which part of your own communication made the situation more difficult?
Overview: Use a concrete project to demonstrate how you surfaced ambiguous decisions and communication friction, lined up owners and deadlines, handled remaining uncertainty, and kept delivery safe.
