October 7, 2026 · 1 min read
Talk through two deadline situations: one in which you delivered under a tight deadline, and one in which the work was not completed by the deadline.
Part 1 — Delivering under a tight deadline
How did you choose what to deliver, arrange the work, and preserve the quality required for the result?
What This Part Should Address
- The core objective, constraints, and choices about scope.
- Dependencies, communication, verification, and the final outcome.
Part 2 — Missing a deadline
What occurred, what were you accountable for, and how did you react once finishing on time seemed unlikely?
What This Part Should Address
- Why the deadline was missed and when you communicated about it.
- A believable recovery plan and a change that fixed the root cause.
What a Strong Answer Includes
- Honest accountability without suggesting that extra effort alone fixes every scheduling issue.
- Concrete tradeoffs and evidence of progress or risk.
- Lessons tied to changed behavior in later work.
Follow-up Questions
- Which part of the tight-deadline scope could be negotiated, and which quality requirement could not?
- What earlier signal might have shown that the deadline was likely to be missed?
Overview: Explain both tight-deadline delivery and a missed deadline using scope decisions, early risk signals, honest communication, recovery, and changed planning habits.
