Behavioral Prompt
Tell me about a time you encountered a serious conflict at work—for example, a disagreement over technical direction, priorities, scope, or execution—with at least one of the following:
- A fellow engineer
- Your manager or leadership
- Cross-functional partners (PM, DS, SRE, Security, etc.)
What to Cover
- Situation and context: What project was involved, how much time pressure existed, and what was on the line?
- Conflict details: What did each side specifically want, and what were their reasons?
- Your actions: How did you reduce tension, bring incentives into alignment, and push toward a decision?
- Outcome: What changed afterward in delivery, quality, relationships, or business impact?
- Reflection: If the same situation came up again, what would you improve or do differently?
Evaluation Focus
- Skill at mediating conflict in a constructive way
- Managing expectations upward and across teams
- Clear communication and decision-making when things are uncertain
Overview: This question tests conflict-resolution and stakeholder-management abilities: mediation, expectation setting, and clear communication while working through disagreements with peers, managers, and cross-functional colleagues.
