Behavioral questions you might face include:
- Describe a situation where you had a conflict with a teammate or partner team. What happened, how did you handle it, and what was the result?
- Which project are you most proud of, and why? What impact did it have?
Overview: This question assesses conflict resolution, collaboration, ownership, and the ability to communicate impact for a Backend Engineer position; it sits in the Behavioral & Leadership category.
Solution Use a clear STAR format: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
1. Conflict question What interviewers want:
- Are you able to disagree in a professional way?
- Can you collaborate across functions?
- Do you prioritize outcomes over ego?
Strong answer shape:
- Give a short account of the disagreement.
- Explain why it was important.
- Show how you listened, clarified objectives, and relied on data.
- Describe the resolution and what changed afterwards.
- Close with what you learned.
Good themes:
- Getting aligned on requirements
- Tradeoffs between speed and quality
- Ownership boundaries across teams
- Escalation used appropriately rather than emotionally
Avoid:
- Blaming other people
- Claiming the other person was simply wrong
- Sharing a story with no measurable result
2. Proudest project question What interviewers want:
- Proof of ownership
- Technical depth
- Business or user impact
- Personal standards and judgment
Strong answer shape:
- What the problem was
- Why it mattered
- What exactly you owned
- The hardest technical or organizational challenge
- The measurable outcome
- Why it makes you proud
Good closing elements:
- Improved metrics
- Reliability or performance gains
- Cross-team influence
- Lessons you would apply again
A strong behavioral response is specific, measurable, and reflective.
